At the Bangkok airport - ready to head to Chiang Mai...
We’ve arrived in Chiang Mai.
Welcome to Chiang Mai.
The Dustin Princess Hotel lobby
Upon arrival, much to our surprise, we’re right in the middle of a festival.
The Loy Krathong Festival is said to be one of the most interesting and fascinating festivals in Thailand. It’s celebrated based on the full moon, November 2-4. Luckily, we’ve arrived on the full moon (3rd) and it’s full festival.
It’s origins are to pay respect to the Goddess of the Water showing their gratitude on their plentiful use of water and ask for forgiveness in creating the pollution the lanterns cause.
In Chiang Mai, it is specifically called Yee Peng – floating of lanterns into the sky.
People write their wish on the lantern before setting the fuel on fire and letting it ascend to the skies.

Here are some of our photos
Before being released.
As they’re being released.
The night sky with many thousands of lanterns in all directions as far as we can see and a full moon right in the center.
No, these aren’t stars... they’re floating lanterns...
Now, we’ve only been in Chiang Mai for about 3 hours and have been taking in the festival. It’s time for dinner and, what the heck, we decided to go to The Hard Rock Cafe. We just couldn’t resist...
And with festival fireworks just down the road.
With live music.
Friendly staff.
Whew!
