10/27/2017 - Mutianyu Great Wall of China

Seeing and walking the Great Wall is the reason we came to China. The Wall is one of the Seven Wonders of the World...

The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs.  The Mutianyu Great Wall was first built by the Northern Qi Dynasty in (550–577) over 1,400 years ago.  It was rebuilt and strengthened in the 6th century during the Ming Dynasty. This section of the Wall is known to be the best preserved among all sections of the Great Wall.

The majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644)

The Wall was built to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups. The total length of the Wall was 3,700 miles. It was constructed soldiers, peasants and rebels. Many workers died and were buried as part of the Great Wall itself.

We ascended what seemed like countless steps to the vantage point from which we took this photo. We came from just below the tower near the top of the hill in the distance.

There hasn’t been any major reconstruction; just miscellaneous repairs. Due to natural erosion and human damage, about 2,000 kilometers, or 30% of the Wall has disappeared.

All of the materials in the construction of the Wall were delivered by hand, rope, cart and goat.
